Calendar (Egoyan, 1993) was a film about “love” memory. Meaning that the events that are being recalled have to deal with a past/present love. In this movie, it seems like the photographer is recalling memories of his estranged wife while he is at home on his dates or while writing a letter.
His memories are mainly of how he “lost” his wife to their Armenian tour guide. These are shown through a video camera as he was recording them and by the calendar hanging on his wall. These memories seem to on his mind all the time because as we see in the film, the sound of the videos and images always seem to be interrupting his “dates”. There were some parts in the film where we see the video footage rewind and playback. I didn’t think of it as actual physical rewinding but as the photographer wanting to relive a memory. Many people including myself do this, we rewind certain memories and think about them over again to sort of relive that experience. Before I knew that the dates were staged I thought that the photographer has put his life “on repeat”. That he has grown accustomed to his new life but was happier with his wife because they had adventures together which is why he’s always thinking about her.
In a Washington Post article, Kempley mentions something I never even thought about. She says about Egoyan “Basically, he believes that the better the equipment gets, the more alienated we become from our environment, each other, our gods and finally ourselves. ” This is so true in this film and in real life. In the movie, we only see the photographer’s wife through the camera lens so we feel his alienation from her and can see why things are with them the way they are. In today’s world the term “equipment” can be used for the internet, tv, etc… These things most of can alienate us from our friends and family if we obsess over them like the photographer obsesses over his camera.
